Traveler`s diarrhea (TD) is the most common illness affecting up to 50% of international travellers. Even though it could be caused by viruses or parasites, the primary cause of TD is a bacterium called Escherichia Coli (E. Coli). TD is characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramp, mild fever, and fatigue. Most TD cases start suddenly within the first week of travel and resolves in 2 to 3 days by itself.
Risk factors for developing TD:
- Travelling to developing countries in South America, Africa, Asia, and Middle East.
- Children.
- Diabetic people.
- People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- People with compromised immune system.
- Taking antacids or medications that reduce the production of acid.
- Consuming contaminated food or water.
