Morning sickness is nausea and vomiting experienced by women during the early weeks of pregnancy. Affecting up to 80 % of pregnant women, it usually occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy between the weeks 2 and 12 and subsides spontaneously by week 16.
Nausea and vomiting are usually more severe in the morning (morning sickness), though they may be seen at any time during pregnancy. The symptoms may get worsen by cooking smells or strong odors.
Persistent and severe vomiting that causes significant dehydration, electrolyte abnormalities (increased PH level, and decreased potassium), ketosis, and even weight loss is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum.
Hyperemesis gravidarum could be a symptom of a molar pregnancy (hydatidiform mole) or multiple pregnancies.

- Water: 2 – 3 liters a day. Drink one glass every 1 – 2 hours throughout the day. Upon waking up, sipping on a half glass of water with lime or lemon juices and one tablespoon honey inside may reduce symptom significantly.
- Eat few crackers or pieces of bread or toast upon waking up (before getting out of bed and being in standing position).
- Avoid cooking foods that generate strong odors.
- Have small and frequent meals throughout the day.
- Apple cider vinegar: 2 – 3 teaspoons in a glass of water (with room temperature). It is better sipped rather than drinking at once.
- Ginger tea.
- Peppermint tea.
- Anis and fennel seeds.
- Citrus fruits.
- Fresh fruits and vegetables.
Recommended Supplements:
- Vitamin B6: 50 – 75 mg a day.
- Ginger Root Extract: 500 – 1000 mg a day.
- Peppermint Oil: 1 – 2 drops in a glass of water sipped upon waking up.
- Vitamin C: 2000 – 3000 mg a day.
