Cycling is a competitive Olympic sport in which athletes use bicycles to compete with each other. It is a popular sport worldwide and most people engage in this sport as a recreational sport rather than a competitive sport.
According to the IOC, cycling events have been categorized into four groups: BMX cycling, road cycling, track cycling, and cross – county (mountain biking).
BMX cycling is a cycle sport in which athletes use BMX bikes. BMX stands for bicycle motocross.
Road cycling is a cycle sport in which athletes compete with each other individually or as a team on an open road in different events, such as criterium (with usually less than a mile in length), one-day road race, time trial, and multiple staged – events like the Tour de France.
Track cycling is a cycle sport in which athletes compete in a velodrome (a special arena designed for track cycling) in different events. Athletes use track bicycles that do not have brakes.
Cross – county (XC) is one of the mountain bike races. It is a cycle sport in which athletes compete off-road in lengths from 6-8 km to 50 km.
There are more varieties of cycling events that are not held in Olympic Games. The cycling events in Olympic Games may differ slightly from that in world championship competition.
